In early February, Victoria West High School’s Warrior Speech and Debate team saw six members split into three teams compete at the UIL District 29-5A Cross-Examination Competition in Victoria.

Emily Kempfer, junior, and Lauren Montgomery, freshman, advanced through the competition to become District 29-5A’s Runner-Up team in Cross-Examination Debate. Kempfer and Montgomery will compete at the UIL State Cross-Examination Debate competition Friday, March 18 and Saturday, March 19 in Austin.

The two other teams who competed for VWHS featured all freshmen, with Jazzalyn Clifford and Celeste Kubicek on one team and Sophie Quimby and Olivia Scavo on the other.

“These students have worked very hard under pressure, most trying the Cross-Examination Debate for the very first time,” said Coach James Cox. “They overcame the adversities of time, difficult opponents, and either unknown or strict judging paradigms, and I couldn’t be prouder of them and their success. State is going to be fun.”

Victoria ISD would like to congratulate all these students and Coach Cox on their hard work!
