Senior To Do List
_____ 1. Tests: If you are planning to attend a four-year university after high school graduation, you will need to take the SAT and/or the ACT. SAT test dates and information: www.collegeboard.com. ACT test dates and information: www.actstudent.org. Register early! If you are currently on free or reduced lunch, you are eligible for SAT and/or ACT fee waivers. See you counselor, career coach, or Mr. Morgan if you are in AVID.
_____ 2. College Visits: Senior year students have up to two excused absences for college visits. You must bring written documentation from the college to ensure that these absences are excused. Narrow down your college choices to top 3-4. Have a dream college, a couple of good schools, and 1 sure thing.
_____ 3. Applications: Submit applications for admission. In a notebook, record deadlines for early admission, regular admission, financial aid application with your college financial aid office, and housing application deadlines. Be sure to keep up with your deadlines! If you are on free or reduced lunch you are eligible for application fee waivers. See your counselor, career coach, or Mr. Morgan if you are in AVID. Texas Common Application is www.applytexas.org. When applying, be sure to complete the scholarship application.
_____ 4. Transcripts: Send official copies of transcripts to the colleges you’ve applied for. You can request for these to be sent from Mrs. Familo in the bookkeeping office.
_____ 5. Letter of Recommendations: Ask 2 teachers and another person who knows you outside of school to write letters of recommendation for you. Give them a resume or list of your activities/involvement. Be sure to give them at least 5 days to complete your letter. Keep copies for use later in scholarship application.
_____ 6. Scholarships: Start applying for scholarships. Copies of scholarships are available outside of the College and Career Center. Students should check the VWHS website, listen to announcements and read your College and Career newsletter for available scholarships. You can sign up for the College and Career monthly newsletter on the West Website.
_____ 7. FAFSA: In October, you and a parent need to complete the FAFSA, which is necessary to receive grants and scholarships from your college financial aid office. Parents Guide to FAFSA
_____ 8. Financial Aid: Be sure you have applied to your college’s financial aid office by the deadline to receive a financial aid offer from the schools you have been accepted to. This may help make your decision as to which school you will attend.
