Victoria ISD’s East and West high schools hosted a GenTX event on Thursday, November 18 at the Emerging Technology Center as part of Generation Texas (GenTX) Month and GenTX Week.

VISD staff and community volunteers held a GenTX Luncheon for 60 students from each campus to educate them about the college admissions process, financial aid opportunities, and career options. Volunteers shared their education and professional experiences with students to provide them with a clear understanding of highlighted professions.

“For the past six years, the GenTX luncheon has provided a unique opportunity for business and community leaders to join the District’s efforts in building a college and career-ready culture among all students throughout our high schools,” said Brandi Henke, VISD counseling director. “Students and mentors alike enjoy the informal setting where conversations about career paths, education, and the workforce take place and plant seeds for future growth.”

GenTX Month is an annual, month-long campaign combining statewide the College Application and Financial Aid Awareness campaign, the nationwide American College Application Campaign initiative (ACAC), and the 60x30TX Texas Challenge to Reach Higher efforts.

“The event was very helpful to me,” said Dayshaun Huerta, junior at Victoria West High School. “I didn’t know about all of the dual-credit opportunities that were offered here, so it was great to learn more about that.”

The event on Thursday was specifically part of the GenTX Week Application Campaign’s adoption of the nationwide ACAC initiative and sought to increase the number of students who are applying to college early in their senior year. This event focused primarily on first-generation students who may not otherwise apply to college.

VISD hopes this day encourages the 60 students involved to take the next steps towards their future, and ultimately finding their ‘And’ when they graduate from high school.

GenTX Decision Day is Monday, May 2, 2022. Students will be recognized and celebrated for their plans after high school.
