Dear Victoria ISD Students, Families, and Staff,
Victoria Independent School District is aware that student-led demonstrations have occurred in schools across the state. We recognize that student voice is an important part of leadership and civic life, and our 10 VISD Values are foundational to fostering this environment. There are appropriate ways for students to express their views, including communicating with elected officials, participating in community activities outside of school hours, and engaging respectfully in discussions that do not disrupt the school day.
It is VISDโs responsibility to maintain student safety, protect instructional time, and ensure the focus of the school day is directed toward teaching and learning. VISD will enforce established attendance policies and guidance released by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) related to student demonstrations during the instructional day, including clear directives that walkouts or like activities during school hours are prohibited. Guidance further stipulates the following:
Student Expectations
Students are expected to remain on campus during school hours. As per policy, students who leave class or campus without authorization during the instructional day will be marked as an unexcused absence in accordance with state and local attendance requirements. Student absences may affect eligibility for exemption from finals and extracurricular participation.
Staff Expectations
In alignment with TEA guidance and state law, staff are not permitted to participate in, plan, promote, guide, or endorse student-led walkouts or demonstrations during the instructional day. Educators who encourage these activities may be subject to investigation and sanction, including revocation.
VISD will cooperate fully with any inquiries to ensure alignment with TEA guidance and applicable regulations.
